With age, we develop wrinkles on our face making us look older and more tired than we actually are. Our skin must withstand the effects of sun damage and toxins as we age. Ageing is accompanied by the appearance of two types of wrinkles: dynamic and static.
Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle over-activity and repeated muscular contractions (frown lines belong to this category).
Static wrinkles are associated with loss of volume, semi-circular lines marking the boundary of the cheek and the mouth area come into this category.
Muscle contractions are caused by the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings. BOTOX® is a type A botulinum toxin whose role is to temporarily block the release of acetylcholine. The muscle is then relaxed and the wrinkle is reduced.
BOTOX® is indicated for the temporary improvement and appearance of
- Moderate to severe vertical lines between the eyebrows seen at maximum frown (glabellar lines)
- Moderate to severe lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet lines) seen at maximum smile
- Moderate to severe crow’s feet lines seen at maximum smile and glabellar lines seen at maximum frown when treated simultaneously
The treatment itself is very simple, quick and relatively painless as very small needles are used on the skin. The result is seen in 3-7 days.
The recovery is immediate and the effects last from 4 to 6 months.
