Delivering Sustainable Dental Care to Underserved Communities in Sri Lanka
At Bluebell Dentistry & Aesthetics, we believe dentistry should make a difference both inside and outside the clinic.
In February 2026, our team completed a one week dental outreach mission in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, supporting remote rural communities where access to dental care is limited. The mission focused on providing essential treatment, preventative care, oral health education, and support to children and vulnerable adults who may otherwise go without.
This was our third charitable mission to Sri Lanka and our largest to date.
Why This Mission Matters
In many rural parts of Sri Lanka, access to routine dental care remains difficult. Communities often face:
- Limited access to dentists and dental treatment
- Little preventative oral health education
- Delayed treatment leading to avoidable pain and infection
- Wider health challenges linked to nutrition and wellbeing
Our aim was not only to provide immediate support, but to help create long term, sustainable improvements in oral health.
What We Delivered
Working alongside local dental professionals and community organisations, including Lions and Rotary International Clubs, we delivered care across multiple schools and rural locations.
Key outcomes from the outreach mission:
- Over 800 school children received dental scans and screenings
- More than 300 children received minor dental treatment
- Over 70 elderly residents from abandoned care homes were assessed
- Fluoride varnish was applied to the majority of children screened
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and essential dental materials were distributed
With access to a mobile dental chair supplied by local colleagues, we were able to treat children directly within their communities, helping remove barriers to care.
More Than Dentistry
During the mission, we sadly observed signs of malnutrition among many children.
While our main focus was dental treatment, we also provided milk and snacks as immediate support. This highlighted the close connection between oral health, nutrition, and wider wellbeing.
It reinforced our commitment to creating future programmes that focus on both treatment and prevention
Supporting Batticaloa Teaching Hospital
A major step forward for the region has been the creation of a dedicated restorative dentistry department at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.
Until recently, the hospital did not have a dedicated dental unit. Thanks to the efforts of local clinicians, this service has now been established. However, it remains under-resourced.
Current challenges include:
- Lack of basic dental equipment
- Shortages of emergency root canal materials
- Limited restorative supplies such as composite and glass ionomer materials
To help support the new unit, Bluebell Dentistry & Aesthetics donated approximately USD $1,000 worth of dental materials during our recent mission.
While this provided valuable short-term support, there is a clear need for continued investment and assistance.
Our Long Term VisionÂ
Our goal is to deliver this outreach programme at least twice each year, allowing continuity of care and measurable improvements in oral health outcomes.
Our future focus includes:
- Investing in portable dental units to reach remote communities
- Supporting local dentists with equipment and materials
- Delivering preventative dentistry programmes for children aged 6 to 16
- Providing oral health education for parents and families
- Offering mentorship and clinical training for local professionals
- Expanding into Sri Lanka’s Central and Western Provinces
We have already built strong operational teams in Trincomalee and Batticaloa, which gives us a solid foundation for future growth.
Partnership OpportunitiesÂ
To expand this programme further, we welcome support from like-minded organisations and global dental leaders.
With the right partnerships, we can:
- Reach significantly more children in underserved communities
- Improve treatment outcomes through better equipment
- Strengthen local healthcare capacity
- Deliver measurable, long-term oral health improvements
We believe this is a meaningful opportunity to combine global expertise with local action, bringing dental care to those who need it most.
